In this preview, the 2024 Olympics head into the last week of competition. The Cincinnati Bengals kick off their preseason. Plus, tennis’s recently rebranded Cincinnati Open begins this weekend.

2024 Paris Olympics

University of Cincinnati alumnus Annette Echikunwoke has advanced to the women’s hammer throw finals. The finals will be Tuesday at 1:55 PM (all times Eastern U.S.). Meanwhile, Max Holt and Team USA’s men’s volleyball team will play Brazil in the quarterfinals Monday at 3 PM. If the U.S. advance, they will play Wednesday at either 10 AM or 2 PM. Jordan Thompson and the U.S. women’s volleyball team will play in the quarterfinals too. Taking on Poland Tuesday at 11 AM. The semifinals will be Thursday at 10 AM and 2 PM.

The U.S. women’s soccer team will play in the semifinals. After an extra time 1-0 victory over Japan last Saturday; the U.S. will play Germany Tuesday at 12 PM. Germany beat Canada in a penalty shootout in last Saturday’s quarterfinals. Canada’s team features UC alumnus Vanessa Gilles. Brazil and Spain will play in the other semifinal Tuesday at 3 PM.

Team USA’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have advanced to the quarterfinals. The men’s team will play Brazil Tuesday at 3:30 PM. The women’s team will play Nigeria Wednesday at 3:30 PM. Meanwhile, Cincinnati native Carlik Jones’ South Sudan team didn’t advance to the quarterfinals. South Sudan concluded the Olympic tournament third in their group.

Xavier University alumnus Piper Kelly competed in women’s speed climbing earlier Monday. Kelly didn’t advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Though her American teammate Emma Hunt qualified for the quarterfinal. Hunt had a personal best in the seeding heats. The semifinals and final will also be on Wednesday.

On the track, UC connections Naquille Harris and Chris Borzor’s competed in the men’s 100-meter dash. Both advanced out of the preliminary round. Yet, they didn’t advance past the first round. America’s Noah Lyles ultimately won last Sunday’s 100-meter final in a photo finish. Making Lyles the first American man since 2004 to win gold in that event.

Lawrenceburg, IN native Mason Parris will have to wait until Friday for his competition. Parris is competing in the 125 kg men’s freestyle division. That competition will conclude on Saturday. Northern Kentucky native Mariah Denigan will compete in women’s open water swimming. The competition will be Thursday at 1:30 AM.

Incoming UC freshman Ramez Diaa will compete in the Olympics this week. Diaa will compete in the 10-meter platform dive for Egypt. The preliminary round begins Friday at 4 AM. The semifinals will be on Saturday at 4 AM. The men’s 10-meter diving finals start Saturday at 9 AM. Cincinnati Open

With the Olympic tennis tournament winding down. Tennis’s big stars will make the annual voyage to the Cincinnati area this week. With the Cincinnati Open beginning this Sunday. With qualifying round action at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, OH. Gates open Sunday at 9:30 AM and play begins at 11 AM. That’s also the case for next Monday’s day session.
