College Sports

Xavier Baseball’s season came to an end early Monday morning in Nashville. After losing their regional final to Oregon 11-2. Xavier advanced to that game through a 2-1 upset win against regional host Vanderbilt on Sunday. Knocking Southeastern Conference champions Vanderbilt out of the tournament. With the winning run scored through Matthew DePrey getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Vanderbilt game featured a nearly four-hour rain and lightning delay. That halted play in the top of the ninth. Ultimately wrapping up around 9 PM with a 1-2-3 inning from Xavier pitcher Justin Loer. Xavier wraps up their season with a 39-25 record. They will head into next season as the Big East Conference’s defending champions.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Baseball is hosting their regional. Kentucky will face Indiana in the regional final tonight at 6 PM on ESPN+. This will be the third game in as many days between Indiana and Kentucky. Indiana beat Kentucky 5-3 last Saturday. Kentucky shutout West Virginia 10-0 in an elimination game on Sunday. Then beat Indiana 16-6 hours later to force today’s deciding game. The winner will face either LSU or Oregon State in the Super Regionals.

Beyond Baseball, six Cincinnati Track and Field athletes will contend for a national title. In this week’s NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, TX. Senior Fred Moudani-Likibi will compete in shot put. He holds Cincinnati and the American Athletic Conference’s shot-put record. Moudani-Likibi won the AAC outdoor conference title and will be UC’s only men’s team qualifier.

Senior Rylee Penn will compete in the 1500 meters race. Junior Leonie Troeger will compete in the Javelin competition. She represented Cincinnati in the national championship meet last year. Senior Taylor Beard and Sophomore Annika Kinley will compete in High Jump. While Sophomore Abby Knouff will compete in Pole Vault. The men’s competitions will take place this Wednesday and Friday. The women’s competitions will take place on Thursday and Saturday.
