College Basketball

The University of Cincinnati has a new women’s basketball head coach. Cincinnati alumnus Katrina Merriweather’s hiring was announced last Saturday. Merriweather played for UC from 1997-2001 and was a captain. She helped lead UC to four consecutive postseason tournaments as a player. In 2002, she was a graduate assistant coach when UC clinched their first NCAA Tournament win. Merriweather has a 151-70 record in seven seasons as a head coach. With stints at Wright State and most recently with UC’s longtime conference rival Memphis.

In regional terms, Ohio State and Bowling Green’s women’s basketball teams are the lone teams still contending in their respective tournaments. No.3 seed Ohio State will face No.1 seed Virginia Tech. In the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight tonight in Seattle. Tip-off for that game is set for 9 PM on ESPN. Ohio State beat the No.2 seed UConn on Saturday. The winner of tonight’s game will face LSU in the Final Four this Friday in Dallas.

Louisville’s women’s basketball season ended last night in Seattle. Through their 97-83 loss to Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Clark became the first person to score a 40-point triple-double in an NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament game. She had 41 points, 12 assists and ten rebounds. Meanwhile, Bowling Green will host Florida in their Great Eight game in the WNIT tonight. The winner will face Columbia in the Fab Four on Wednesday. Tonight’s game will tip-off at 6 PM on ESPN3.

Xavier’s men’s team was the last one of regional interest standing going into last weekend. After Cincinnati was knocked out of the NIT in the quarterfinals by Utah Valley. Xavier lost to No.2 seed Texas in the Sweet 16 last Friday. Wrapping up their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018. This weekend will feature three teams making their men’s Final Four debut. Florida Atlantic, Miami (FL) and San Diego State. Xavier’s Big East foe UConn rounds out the final four.

College Sports

Elsewhere in college sports, Cincinnati Baseball will host Louisville this Tuesday at 6 PM. Cincinnati Baseball will also host Wichita State this weekend. With games Friday at 5 PM, Saturday at 2 PM and Sunday at Noon. Cincinnati will also host Temple’s women’s lacrosse team Saturday at Noon on ESPN+. Along with hosting Indiana’s women’s soccer team Sunday at 2 PM.

In Women’s Tennis news, after Xavier beat Cincinnati last Sunday. Cincinnati will host Northern Kentucky Wednesday at 3 PM. Cincinnati and Xavier’s women’s tennis teams will face the same teams this weekend. Xavier and UC will face DePaul and Wichita State this weekend. At the Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility in Cincinnati. Xavier will face DePaul Friday at 1 PM and Wichita State Saturday at Noon. Cincinnati will face Wichita State Friday at 2 PM and DePaul Saturday at 1 PM.

Cincinnati Track and Field will host the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational. The invitational will take place Friday and Saturday at UC’s Gettler Stadium. Northern Kentucky will also participate in the Nikoloff Invitational. Elsewhere in Cincinnati area College Track and Field news, Mount St. Joseph and Thomas More will compete in the same event. The Centre Invite in Danville, KY this Saturday.

Xavier Baseball will face Ohio State in Columbus Tuesday at 6 PM on B1G+. Xavier will face Wright State in Fairborn, OH Wednesday at 3 PM. Then Xavier will host Northern Illinois Friday at 5 PM at Prasco Park in Mason, OH. Then they’ll host Northern Illinois Saturday and Sunday at 1 PM. At Hayden Field in Cincinnati on FloSports.

Northern Kentucky Women’s Golf is hosting The Julie at Elks Run Golf Course in Batavia, OH today and Tuesday. Thomas More’s Women’s Golf team is also participating in this event. Northern Kentucky Baseball will face Bellarmine in Louisville Tuesday at 2 PM. Then host Wright State Friday at 2 PM, Saturday at 1 PM and Sunday at Noon. Northern Kentucky Softball will face Marshall in Huntington, WV Tuesday at 2 PM. Then they will host Cleveland State Friday at 4 PM and Saturday at 1 PM.

Thomas More Baseball will host Kentucky State University Tuesday at 3 PM; at Thomas More Stadium in Florence, KY. Thomas More Men’s Lacrosse will host Malone University Wednesday at 5 PM. At Republic Bank Field in Crestview Hills, KY. Thomas More will face No.6 seed Midway University (KY) in Men’s Volleyball. In the Mid-South Conference Tournament Friday at 12:30 PM in Bowling Green, KY.
