The Football Review

The Cincinnati Bengals lost a back and forth battle against the Cleveland Browns. Losing 37-34 on Sunday at Cincinnati’s Paul Brown Stadium. The game went down practically to the last play. With Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s last second Hail Mary pass falling to the ground. After being deflected by a pack of players in the end zone.

Sunday’s loss added to increasingly public locker room discontent for the Bengals. Defensive veterans Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins are upset over limited playing time. Part of strategic moves that aren’t visibly producing good results for the Bengals defense. While fueling questions about Dunlap and Atkins futures in Cincinnati. All with the National Football League’s November 3rd trade deadline looming.

Injuries hit the Bengals and Browns before and during Sunday’s game. Six Bengals were listed as inactive due to injuries before the game. Joe Mixon, William Jackson III, John Ross, Austin Seibert, Keaton Sutherland and Cethan Carter. Bengals center Trey Hopkins left Sunday’s game with a concussion. While offensive tackle Jonah Williams left the game with a neck injuries.

Cleveland was hit by the most high profile injury of Sunday’s game. With Odell Beckham Jr. reportedly suffering a season-ending torn ACL. The schedule won’t be getting any easier for the Bengals. They will face the now 5-1 Tennessee Titans this coming Sunday. Kickoff at Paul Brown Stadium is set for 1 PM Eastern time on CBS.

In college football news, the Big Ten is back and so is now 4-0 Cincinnati Football. The now No.7 Cincinnati Bearcats won their 2020 road opener last Saturday. Bouncing back after last week’s game against Tulsa Football was postponed due to COVID-19. Routing SMU Football in a top 25 showdown 42-13 last Saturday night. Going into Saturday, Cincinnati was ranked ninth and SMU was ranked 16th in the AP Top 25.

Cincinnati will face another pivotal test in their American Athletic Conference title pursuit this Saturday. Facing defending AAC champions Memphis Football at Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium. Memphis comes into Saturday’s game with a 3-1 record. Fresh from beating Temple Football 41-29 last Saturday. This Saturday’s game is set to kick off at Noon Eastern time on ESPN.

FC Cincinnati: a controversial call and a swan song

FC Cincinnati lost 1-0 to Minnesota United FC last Saturday. The lone goal came in the aftermath of a controversial call. With the referees awarding Minnesota with a corner kick in stoppage time. Ruling the ball last touched FCC’s Nick Hagglund before going out of bounds. That set up a corner kick where Minnesota’s Aaron Schoenfeld scored off a rebound.

Now the orange and blue are preparing for the end of an era. This week will mark the end of FC Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium era. Nippert Stadium has served as FCC’s home stadium since their inaugural USL season in 2016. FC Cincinnati will faces Sporting KC in their 2020 home and Nippert era finale Wednesday. That match is set to start at 7:30 PM Eastern on WSTR-TV. FCC will wrap up this week with a match against Atlanta United this Sunday. That match will kick off at 7 PM Eastern on WSTR-TV.

Cincinnati Reds: Bauer wins MLBPA pitching honors

The World Series is in full swing and so is baseball’s awards season. Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer won this year’s National League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher award. In the MLB Players Association’s Player’s Choice Awards; which were announced last Thursday. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Bobby Nightengale, part of Bauer’s prize includes a $5,000 grant for charity. Bauer is considered as a strong contender for the National League’s Cy Young Award. Winning that honor would make Bauer the first to win a Cy Young with the Reds.

Akiyama and Barnhart named Gold Glove finalists

Meanwhile, Reds left fielder Shogo Akiyama and catcher Tucker Barnhart are Gold Glove finalists. Barnhart won a Gold Glove in 2017; becoming the first Reds catcher to win one since Johnny Bench. Akiyama just wrapped up his first major league season; he won six Gold Gloves in Japan’s Pacific League. If Akiyama wins, he would be the Reds first Gold Glove winning outfielder since Eric Davis. The Gold Glove and Cy Young award winners will be announced in November.
