This week’s review features three shutouts for local teams. The Cincinnati Bengals get their first win of the season. Plus, rough news for the Kentucky Speedway.
A week packed with shutout losses
Two Cincinnati professional teams were connected by shutouts last week. The Cincinnati Reds had the most high profile shutouts. Being swept out of the MLB Postseason by the Atlanta Braves. In Cincinnati’s first trip to the postseason since 2013. The Reds were shutout 1-0 last Wednesday in extra innings. Then lost 5-0 in game two of their National League Wild Card Series last Thursday. More coverage of the Reds brief yet historic postseason run is available here.
As if those weren’t enough shutouts for Cincinnati to take. FC Cincinnati extended their new goal-less streak to three matches. Less than a month after snapping a previous five match goal-less streak. FC Cincinnati lost 2-0 on the road to Minnesota United FC last Saturday. FCC’s heading into a busy stretch with four matches in a 12 day span.
Starting with a road trip to face the Philadelphia Union this Wednesday at 7:30 PM Eastern. FCC’s current goal-less streak started with a September 23rd scoreless draw against Philadelphia. FC Cincinnati wraps up this week with a Sunday night home match. With the orange and blue taking on Toronto FC at 7:30 PM Eastern. In the first match between those teams this season.
The football review
The Cincinnati Bengals snapped Cincinnati’s collective score-less streak last Sunday. Beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-25 for their first win of the season. Along with it being Joe Burrow’s first win as a NFL quarterback. The Bengals trailed 13-10 at halftime; missing out on two potential first half touchdowns. The first was called off because of a penalty. The second was ripped away from Cincinnati through an interception. With Jacksonville’s Myles Jack ripping the ball out of Drew Sample’s hands in the end zone.
Outside of field goals and extra points from kicker Randy Bullock. The rest of Cincinnati’s points came through the combination of Joe and Joe. With Joe Burrow connecting with running back Joe Mixon for three touchdowns. The first was a nine yard reception in the second quarter. The second and third were rushing touchdowns in the third quarter. Both happening within a less than five minute span. Giving the Bengals a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
In College Football, Cincinnati Football won their conference opener last Saturday. Beating USF Football at Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium 28-7. There were turnovers-a-plenty in this game; the USF Bulls had five and the Cincinnati Bearcats had four. Despite a fumble, running back Gerrid Doaks had a strong game. Leading the game with 22 carries, 102 rushing yards and a touchdown. This was Doaks first 100 yard rushing game since last November. Another UC highlight was Tre Tucker’s touchdown through a 97 yard kickoff return.
Tucker’s touchdown was UC’s first kickoff return touchdown since 2011. Cincinnati is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play. Saturday’s win helped Cincinnati move up four spots in the AP Top 25. Moving from being No.15 last week to No.11 this week. This week is a bye week for No.11 Cincinnati. Their next game is October 17th at Tulsa Football. In the Bearcats’ first road game of this season.
Kentucky Speedway losing NASCAR races
Next year is the tenth anniversary of Kentucky Speedway’s first NASCAR Cup Series race. Last week, the 20 year old Sparta, KY track found out it will not be hosting NASCAR next year. A blow in an already difficult year for Northern Kentucky’s economy. Instead, next year’s Quaker State 400 is scheduled to be run at Atlanta Motor Speedway. According to The Lexington Herald-Leader’s Mark Story; NASCAR’s Kentucky snub could be attributed to a push for more road surface variety. Moving away from some standard mile and a half track’s like the Kentucky Speedway. NASCAR is reportedly adding a dirt track race and six road-course events to their 2021 schedule.
