Cincinnati Reds season disrupted by COVID-19 diagnosis

After several false alarms and close calls in recent weeks. The Cincinnati Reds season is being disrupted by a positive COVID-19 test. The news broke after the Reds win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Saturday and Sunday’s games against the Pirates were postponed as a result. The first postponements due to COVID-19 for the Reds this season.

As of Monday morning, there have been no additional positive tests reported. The Reds next scheduled game is Tuesday night. With the Reds set to start a ten game road trip with a series against the Kansas City Royals. No makeup dates have been announced for Saturday or Sunday’s games. The Reds are in a better position to handle this situation. Compared to the Miami Marlins and St.Louis Cardinals. The Reds had time to learn from the Marlins and Cardinals outbreaks.

Cincinnati Football’s schedule changes amid wild week for College Football

Cincinnati Football navigated through another roller coaster week for college football. UC is still planning to play football this fall. They’re currently the only Ohio FBS school planning to do so. Meanwhile, Cincinnati’s season and home opener against Austin Peay Football is being moved. Originally scheduled for September 3rd, the game will now be played on September 19th.

At this rate, Cincinnati Football will be the only local college sports team playing this fall. The NCAA cancelled all Division I fall championships last week. Northern Kentucky University’s Horizon League postponed fall sports last Thursday. Xavier University’s Big East Conference reached the same conclusion last Wednesday. The NCAA’s move doesn’t apply to FBS Football because the NCAA doesn’t run the College Football Playoff.

The NCAA Division II and III fall championships were postponed prior to the D-I announcement. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) made a similar decision in late July. Crestview Hills, KY’s Thomas More University is entering it’s second academic years as an NAIA school. The NAIA decision allowed conferences to compete this fall if they want to. However, TMU’s Mid-South Conference postponed fall sports last week.

A busy weekend for Cincinnati soccer

There were two big developments for Cincinnati soccer this past weekend. First, Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle is leaving the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. Signing a deal with the NWSL’s OL Reign; a team based in Tacoma, Washington. Despite this deal, Lavelle might opt to play overseas instead. According to a report from The Athletic’s Meg Linehan; Lavelle recently signed a deal with Manchester City’s women’s team.

Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati’s season resumes this Friday at 7:30 PM Eastern. Facing DC United in FCC’s first home match at Nippert Stadium since September 29, 2019. Friday’s match will be the first of three home matches played with no spectators. Also, the date of one of home match is being moved. FCC will now play the Chicago Fire on September 2nd at 7:30 PM Eastern; the match was previously scheduled to happen a day earlier.

Cincinnati native Jim Herman wins Wyndham Championship

Cincinnati native Jim Herman won the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship this weekend. Edging past Billy Horschel by a stroke; through finishing the tournament 21 under par. In the final event before the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Herman is an alumnus of Cincinnati’s St.Xavier High School and the University of Cincinnati. At 42 years young, this weekend’s win is Herman’s third PGA Tour victory.

Cincinnati Bengals wheelings, dealings and injuries

Last week was packed with several Cincinnati Bengals transactions. Bringing on defensive ends Amani Bledsoe and Bryce Sterk. The Bengals acquired Sterk on waivers from the Miami Dolphins. Bledsoe spent last preseason with the Tennessee Titans. He was one of two free agent signings the Bengals made last week. Cincinnati signed defensive tackle Mike Daniels to a one-year $2.7 million deal last Wednesday. Daniels’ signing came a day after the Bengals waived defensive tackle Tyler Clark.

Injuries are also leaving a mark on the Bengals. Cornerback Trae Waynes is being sidelined by a torn pectoral injury. A.J. Green was removed from practice today after tweaking his left leg. Defensive Lineman Renell Wren also suffered a leg injury today. In the first day of full contact practices for the Bengals. Meanwhile, wide receiver John Ross was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Leaving camp after his son and the child’s mother were diagnosed with COVID-19.
