The college basketball weekly roundup
Cincinnati Basketball mounted two big comebacks last week. Wrapping up the last week of the regular season with a sweep. Beating USF Basketball 79-67 in Tampa Bay last Tuesday. After Cincinnati trailed by 13 points with 13 minutes left in the second half. Cincinnati trailed by 14 points at halftime against Temple Basketball. Coming back to win through Trevon Scott’s last second tip-in. Beating Temple 64-63 on Senior Night for the Cincinnati Bearcats.
There was last second drama for Xavier Basketball last Saturday too. In their 72-71 loss to Butler Basketball on Xavier’s Senior Night. Butler’s Kamar Baldwin made a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in the game. The last of Baldwin’s career-high 36 points in Saturday’s game. Dropping Xavier to an 8-10 conference record in the process.
Xavier also managed to narrow a large deficit last Wednesday. Yet, they never even led against Providence Basketball. Losing 80-74 after trailing by 15 points five minutes before halftime. Strong Providence three-point shooting made a pivotal difference. So did multiple missed shots in the final minutes by Xavier.
What to watch during Championship Week
Now it’s on to the conference tournaments for local teams. Northern Kentucky Basketball will play tonight in the Horizon League’s semifinals. Taking on Green Bay Basketball tonight in Indianapolis at 9:30 PM Eastern on ESPN2. The winner will face either UIC Basketball or Wright State Basketball. In Tuesday night’s championship game at 7 PM Eastern.
The Xavier Musketeers will go into the Big East Tournament as the No.7 seed. Facing DePaul Basketball Wednesday night at 9:30 PM Eastern on FS1. The winner will face No.2 seed Villanova Basketball on Thursday night. That quarterfinal game will tip-off at 7 PM Eastern on FS1. Check out the full 2020 Big East Tournament bracket here.
Cincinnati’s win over Temple helped them clinch the AAC Tournament’s No.1 seed. Putting their NCAA Tournament hopes on more stable footing. The Bearcats have earned a bye into Friday’s quarterfinals. The Bearcats will face either USF or UCF Basketball on Friday. Cincinnati’s quarterfinal game will tip-off at 1 PM Eastern on ESPN2.
Same song, second verse for FC Cincinnati
It was deja-vu all over again for FC Cincinnati last Saturday. Losing by one goal after falling behind 2-0 for the second consecutive time. Dropping FC Cincinnati to a 0-2 start to their season. Saturday’s loss was a 2-1 loss on the road to Atlanta United. FCC’s lone goal was scored by Yuya Kubo in the 64th minute.
Six days earlier, FCC lost 3-2 on the road to the New York Red Bulls. After falling behind 2-0 in the first half of that match. Now FCC is preparing for their 2020 home opener. Facing DC United this Saturday evening at Nippert Stadium. That match will start at 5:30 PM Eastern time on WSTR-TV.
