Training camp is starting up this week for the Cincinnati Bengals and other NFL teams. Amid an offseason of changes, here are five players to watch during training camp.
Tyler Boyd
Tuesday was a big day for the Bengals wide receiver. Boyd and the Bengals agreed to a contract extension. The four-year extension for the 24 year old is worth $43 million. This extension comes after a breakout 2018 season for Boyd. One that featured a career-high seven touchdowns, 1,028 yards and 76 receptions.
A.J. Green
With Boyd’s extension, the focus now turns to A.J. Green’s contract. Green is entering the final year of his contract. Spending his entire career so far with Cincinnati; as the go-to receiver for quarterback Andy Dalton. Like many other Bengals, he is emerging from an injury hampered 2018 season. A healthy Green, along with Boyd and Joe Mixon could make the Bengals a real contender this season.
Cordy Glenn
Cincinnati’s 2019 first round pick Jonah Williams’ injury puts a spotlight on Glenn. Williams’ season-ending injury shook up the Bengals plans for their offensive line. A line left in shambles over the last couple of years through injuries. The Bengals were planning on having Glenn be a guard before Williams’ injury. Glenn will likely be the Bengals main left tackle this upcoming season.
Michael Jordan (no, not that Michael Jordan)
Clint Boling’s retirement due to medical concerns last week puts the spotlight on Jordan. Boling spent all of his eight seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati. His retirement leaves the Bengals without one of their most experienced guards. This adds to the attention that Jordan was likely to get as a rookie. He joins John Jerry, Christian Westerman and Trey Hopkins as candidates to be Boling’s main successor at left guard.
Drew Sample
Elsewhere, Drew Sample is another rookie to watch at training camp this year. The tight end could see a ton of playing time this season. After losing Tyler Kroft to free agency earlier this year. Tyler Eifert’s longstanding struggle with injuries is another factor. Leaving C.J. Uzomah as the Bengals most dependable tight end going into training camp.
Ultimately, Zac Taylor will be the person that Bengals fans might pay the most attention to. Taylor is facing his first training camp as an NFL head coach. He will face some of the same challenges that his peers will face in the next six weeks. All while trying to build the Bengals into a contender for the first time since 2015. All of this will put him under a metaphorical microscope throughout training camp.
Bengals training camp will officially start on July 27th. With a practice at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. Every practice open free to the public after that will be in Cincinnati. All but one will be on the Bengals practice fields outside Paul Brown Stadium. The lone exception is their August 3rd “Family DEY” practice in Paul Brown Stadium itself.
